IE7 Tweaks

1. Internet explorer run once error

While opening the first time, Internet explorer 7 loads a welcome screen
(http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx) to customize the settings for the browser. It also
loads the welcome page when you reset the internet explorer settings to default.

But sometimes, the welcome screen might be blank with a  blue back ground showing an 'error
on page' message at the bottom. Hence you won't be able to save or change any settings due
to this,  you may get the same run once page every time you load the Internet explorer. There
is a simple work around to directly go to the home page.

You will see a prompt as shown below; Click 'Yes'. Then click 'OK' to close the next dialog box
that appears.

Then close and reopen  Internet explorer. It will directly go to your home page.

Note that this issue will reoccur when you reset the Internet explorer settings. . In addition to
that, you will also face problems in adding search providers in spite of this work around. So,
for a permanent fix to completely display the welcome page and to be able to add search
provider, download this permanent fix from the link below and follow the same procedure
mentioned above to run it:

This issue also occurs if you register shdocvw.dll using regsvr32 command. The funtionality
of shdocvw.dll is replaced by ieframe.dll in IE7. So, when you register the shdocvw.dll, it
replaces ieframe.dll with shdocvw.dll in the location "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ TypeLib \
{EAB22AC0-30C1-11CF-A7EB-0000C05BAE0B} \ 1.1 \ 0 \ win32" which causes this issue

2. Hyperlinks in Outlook email messages do not launch the browser.

When you click on a link in an outlook email message, nothing may happen. This issue occurs
also in  Internet explorer 6, if the registry doesn't contain correct information about file
association. So, you can download this fix and use it for both IE6 and IE7.

Then follow the same instructions which you see for the first one.

3. Hide the search bar in Internet explorer 7

Internet explorer 7 has a search box on the upper right hand side of the window. If you already
have a toolbar that has a search box and want to save some space by hiding the inbuilt
search then you can use this tweak.

4. Move the menubar to the top

In internet explorer 7,the menu bar (the toolbar which has File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools
and Help) appears under the address bar. Some of you may like the way it appeared in
Internet explorer 6 and may wish to move the menu bar to the top. Here is a tweak for you.

5. Block the automatic installation of IE7

Internet Explorer 7 is a critical Windows update and most of the computers in the world has
this new version. But still some of them may feel that they are not ready for IE7 yet and want
to block this one update and install all the other critical windows updates.

Even though blocking IE7 installation is taking one step backward when it comes to security,
people come with complaints like '
My office website hasn't been modified yet for IE7' or 'I have
an old antivirus software that still doesn't allow IE7 to go online
'. If you are one of them, then
download this tweak.

Issues related to IE7 due to
insufficient registry permissions

When IE7 installation occurs it
modifies a lot in the windows registry.
If Administrator and System doesn't
have enough permissions to modify
the registry hives and the files inside
%systemroot%, then you may face
any one of the following issues.

1. You may not be able to install IE7

2. Even if you succeed in installing,
you may get script errors when you
log on to your user account.

3. Windows media player might not
open or you may get the error 'An
internal application error has occured'

4. You may not be able to sign in to
Windows Live messenger

5. You may get script errors when
you open Norton's user interface.

To solve this issue, you can run  a
batch file which executes subinacl
utility. Subinacl is a command line
utility available as a download from
Microsoft and this file has a lot of
command line switches that can be
used to change an user's
permissions to the registry hives and
to system folders.

You can download this '
Runsubinacl
for IE7'
utility to do this work
automatically for you.  Just download
and run the file. Wait until it finishes
and then reboot the computer.
